Travel Magazine Cover

This cover's main goal is to catch the viewer's attention, so they may buy the magazine to get travel tips. The biggest challenge I faced in creating this design came down to selecting the perfect cover photograph. Since Moscow is not a coastal city there are no beautiful beach photographs to promote it, so I decided to use an image of one of its most recognizable landmarks, Saint Basil's Cathedral. However, this beautiful and colorful landmark proved to be challenging when setting the text, because it is very busy and distracting. I resolved this by doing three things: Placing the subject closer to the left side to free up space for my lead article's headline, choosing a thick sans serif (Azo Sans) to set most of the text, and adding a slight drop shadow behind the supporting cover lines.

Besides that, I used Cabrito Didone for the masthead due to its high contrast and ball terminals, and Rough Love for the name Moscow due to its rebellious script appearance which makes the text more interesting to look at. Also, I used a color palette that complements the background photo and helps make the composition more cohesive.
